The Luna vehicle was the first of two unmanned Lunar rovers to land on the moon by the Soviet Union as part of the Lunokhod program. The spacecraft carrying Lunokhod 1 was called Luna 17. Luna 17 was launched on November 10, 1970. After reaching Earth orbit, the final phase of Luna 17’s launch rocket was fired to orbit it towards the moon . During the 322 days of operations, Lunokhod traveled 10,540 meters and returned more than 20,000 images. The location of the Lunokhod 1 has been uncertain since 1971. In November 2010, the location of the rover was determined within an inch.
