Book Cuba with a speech by Fidel Castro. Made in Cuba in the English langauge and made in 1983. The Moncada Barracks was a barracks of the Cuban army in Santiago de Cuba. On July 26, 1953, a group of armed revolutionaries, led by Fidel Castro, attacked the barracks. The attack failed because the element of surprise was gone, the rebels were clearly outnumbered and many weapons were missing. The rebels wanted to capture weapons in the barracks, but due to poor preparation they did not end up in the weapons warehouse but in a barber shop. The attack killed 15 soldiers and three policemen and wounded 23 soldiers and five policemen. Nine rebels were killed and 11 wounded. This armed attack is generally accepted as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution. The date of the attack, July 26, was adopted by Castro as the name for his revolutionary movement (Movimiento 26 Julio or M-26-7) that eventually overthrew the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista on January 12, 1959.
